As a young man, born in 1954, I recognized a specter in my community: The plight of European Jewry.
None of my elders knew how to talk about the Holocaust.
They could present the facts, express moral outrage but none could find
meaning in it. Decades later they're still trying to resolved it and
it's a source of Jewish guilt.
How should one explain it?
Here are two extremes:
The Nazis were right? Jews are vermin and got what they deserved?
Or Jews were martyrs of a sick Nazi society too cowardly to face its
own shadow?
Wise men say truth is somewhere in the middle. I understand that. But
the moral, spiritual and historical contours of this issue are poorly
defined.
"The Shady Elders of Zion" is my stab at interpreting 20th century
Jewish history. Though it's a blasphemous comedy, the narrative contains
truth.
My intention is clear: Absolve the Jews of their neurosis which in
measure stems from their inability to grasp the spiritual significance
of the Holocaust.
Offended Christians and Jews should write their own book.
